Crystal Cove Alliance and Crystal Cove State Park offer a variety of innovative educational and interpretive programs that explore art, science, history, and nature in the Park.  Crystal Cove’s programs are always changing and offer some of the most unique educational experiences anywhere in the State.

Read below to learn about some of the innovative public programs that Crystal Cove Alliance supports during the year, including Citizen Science hikes, exciting campfires, interactive exhibits, and living history events that bring the Cove’s long history to life.

Field Science Saturdays at the Berns Environmental Study Loop


Immerse yourself in the science of park Public Small ESLmanagement and help collect real data about the restoration work in Moro Canyon!  On the second Saturday of every month, join CCA’s Education team at the Michael & Tricia Berns Environmental Study Loop to participate in our ongoing research projects.

Check the Calendar for upcoming program dates, as well as other hikes, campfires, and events.  You can also use the Berns Environmental Study Loop audio guide to visit on your own and explore the public research stations.


Public Small TourHistoric District Walking Tours

On the third Sunday of each month, Laura Davick, former life-long resident of the Historic District and Crystal Cove Alliance’s Founder & Director of External Affairs, guides visitors through the story of Crystal Cove’s history, its rescue, and the future plans for Crystal Cove State Park.

The two-hour walking tour meets at 12 PM on the bluffside deck outside the overnight rental check-in office.  Click here to download a printable flier.

Public Programs with REI Outdoor SchoolPublic Small REI

 Explore Crystal Cove State Park and learn about the science of park management!  A new partnership between REI Outdoor School and Crystal Cove Alliance brings Citizen Science to classic REI programs.  Different classes, such as on-the-water Kayak Tours and Introduction to GPS Navigation, are offered every month. Pre-registration is required.

Public Small SeaglassCommunity Days in the Education Commons

Every Wednesday in July and August, step back in time as the Education Commons comes to life with fun, historical activities for the whole family.  Learn to sketch or dance, try your hand at a traditional craft, enjoy a historic radio show, or explore the science of Crystal Cove State Park.

The fun doesn’t stop the rest of the year!  Every Wednesday from September-June, you can still stop into the Commons to learn about the art of wrapping sea glass.  Check the Calendar for upcoming dates.

Rotating Exhibitions in Cottage #46

Located right in the heart of the Historic District, the iconic Cottage #46 is host to a variety of different exhibits throughout the year.  Learn about the science happening right now in Crystal Cove State Park, the history of the Historic District, or other exciting, educational topics. Exhibits rotate every four months.

Family Plein Air Art Workshop dscn2222

These fun family workshops are intended for parents, grandparents, and children ages 8
and up.  During the three-hour program, family teams will explore the basics of plein air painting, and then work together to design a fun still life arrangement that captures the summer spirit of the Cove, as each family member creates their own masterpiece.

The Great Plein Air Art ExperiencePublic Small Art

Crystal Cove State Park has a long history of plein air artists painting and preserving its beautiful landscapes.  Now every summer, you can be a part of this 100-year-old tradition! Spend a relaxing day with one of Crystal Cove State Park’s plein air artists while capturing the beauty of the Cove on canvas.  No experience required; this introductory class is recommended for novices only.

Public Small Movie NightMovie Nights on the Beach

Every summer, Crystal Cove Alliance hosts two different fun and historic movies on a giant inflatable screen outside the Historic District’s “Beaches” Film & Media Center!  Learn about Crystal Cove’s role in the early film industry as you relax on the sand and enjoy a one of a kind movie-going experience.
